The Rest Day That Definitely Wasn’t

Since we’ve spent the last two days promising our feet a break and failing miserably, we decided today was officially going to be a rest day for our final stretch in the mountains.

Which it turns out we are physically incapable of doing. By 10:30 am, we had already tracked 6,000 steps and the equivalent of 30 flights of stairs. By 12:30, we’d doubled those numbers.

The unplanned climb was worth it though. The view from the top is spectacular where you can see a large part of the Julian Alps, Lake Bohinj, and all the valleys tucked in between. A lovely spot for a late breakfast.

On the way down, I met a “friend.” I use that term loosely because he was definitely not friend-shaped, so I kept my distance. Compared to the one we saw yesterday that was nearly four feet long, this guy looked almost friendly, but I wasn’t about to test that theory.

I know I’ve mentioned the heat before, but it bears repeating: we were expecting mid-to-high 60s. In reality, the feels like temp has consistently been about 10 degrees hotter the entire trip.  Today was particularly sunny too, so I managed to take on some redness. Fingers crossed its mild enough to turn to tan — since my tan is coming along nicely surprisingly.

After burning off approximately a million calories, we headed to Gostilna Ema. It was packed, but we managed to grab an outdoor table with a perfect mountain view. We needed to catch up on calories, so fried cheese, french fries, and chicken schnitzel it is.

We spent the rest of the afternoon wandering down to Lake Bohinj to hide in the shade and watch the fish in the crystal-clear water. And we ended our day in the best way — sitting on the Alpine swing with my absolute favorite view.

I’m officially boycotting hiking for the rest of this trip. Though I’ve said that the last two days too…
